Counselling offered after NSW primary school student's death

Primary school students are being offered counselling after the suicide of a 10-year-old year 5 student at a NSW primary school. The Daily Telegraph reports that police are investigating. Support is being offered to the school community.

Children's report finds increase in self-harm in children

The 2014 Children's Rights Report has been released, and it reveals that self harm among young people is increasing, whilst the age of the children involved is getting younger and younger. Yahoo News reports that the study was able to look at unpublished coronial data from 2007 to 2012.

Probe in to Vic Department of Education

In Vic, a probe by the anti-corruption commission is underway, as The Age reports that the Vic Department of Education held an extravagant Christmas party. Allegations into the misuse of funds are also being investigated.

Autism education website launched

A new website, aimed to give guidance and information about children with autism spectrum disorder, has been launched. The Age writes that Amaze Online Classroom is funded by Amaze, and the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

NSW teacher arrested on charges of sex with a student

A high school teacher has been arrested after her husband reported an alleged sexual relationship with a 17-year old boy, according to the Daily Telegraph. Although the age of consent in NSW is 16, sexual relations are unlawful if a child is under 'special care'.

Graduate glut in Australia feeds shortage in UK

The Sydney Morning Herald writes that the glut of graduate teachers in NSW has attracted the attention of UK schools who are facing a 'ghastly' shortage of candidates. There are reports that there may be a deficit of 30,000 teachers by 2017.

8-year-old told to unclog toilet with bare hands

An US 8-year-old student was reportedly told to unclog a school toilet with his hands, reports CTV News. The teacher has been reprimanded, and the toilet was reportedly clogged with paper.

US court awards $75,000 in girl's discrimination lawsuit

A student has won $75,000 in a lawsuit against a US school after a court found that she was discriminated against for having to use a staff toilet. The student is a transgender girl, who has identified as a girl since she was 2, according to ABC News.

NZ study finds same-sex attracted males more affected by school's treatment

A University of Auckland study has found that the way in which a school treats same sex attracted, or both sex attracted males has a significant impact on their mental health. 3 News reports that the study of NZ students noted the disparity between the experiences of male and female students.
