The request, made in the Royal Commission's [Interim Report](https://www.schoolgovernance.net.au/2014/07/03/royal-commission-into-child-abuse-interim-report-what-does-it-mean-for-schools/), seeks an extension of two years, and additional funding. ### Leading child health expert calls for mandatory cyber safety classes Professor Donna Cross, a leading child health researcher, has called for the teaching cyber safety to be mandatory in all schools, according to [ABC News](http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-08-23/cyber-safety-should-be-mandatory-subject-in-school-expert-says/5691216). Currently, it is not mandated under the National Curriculum. These comments come amidst discussions about the introduction of the E-Safety Commissioner. ### Bomb scare at VIC Jewish school A bomb scare has caused an evacuation at a Jewish school in VIC. According to [ABC News](http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-08-21/jewish-primary-school-evacuated-over-nearby-threat/5686170), the incident turned out to be a false alarm. The incident follows the [arrest](http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-08-07/teenagers-arrested-for-bondi-school-bus-abuse/5654108) of teenagers on a bus in NSW over alleged racial abuse of Jewish students. ### VIC parent calls for removal of violent boy A parent at a VIC primary school has called for the removal of a boy from school, claiming that the boy had committed various violent acts. The [Sun Herald](http://www.heraldsun.com.au/leader/bayside/violent-boy-should-be-removed-from-bayside-school-parent-says/story-fngnvli9-1227036166861) reports that the boy allegedly held a knife to his own throat, and has threatened other classmates. ### Measles outbreak in VIC Three children have tested positive for measles in VIC, and a further two are suspected of having contracted it. All five have not been vaccinated. The [Sydney Morning Herald](http://www.smh.com.au/national/health/school-students-at-centre-of-measles-outbreak-in-melbourne-20140820-1065uc.html#ixzz3Ayhc7lYU) reports that all unimmunised children and staff have been excluded from the school. ## **International** ### Suspended US student claims constitutional rights A US student has invoked her constitutional rights after being suspended for shouting 'bless you' across a classroom. The teacher claimed that it was disruptive, but the student cites her 'freedom of religion and freedom of speech'. The story was reported by [WMC Action News 5](http://fox2now.com/2014/08/20/student-suspended-for-saying-bless-you-at-school/). ### UK teacher banned for inappropriate conduct with students According to the [Mirror](http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/teacher-who-threatened-student-atomic-4079604#ixzz3B4UBOtKg), a UK teacher who swore in class, threw books at children, and made inappropriate contact with a female student, has been banned for life from teaching. He also threatened to give a student an 'atomic wedgie'. ### 16 year old student arrested for writing about killing a dinosaur with a gun A 16 year old student who was arrested and suspended for writing about killing a dinosaur with a gun has engaged a lawyer. [NBC News](http://www.nbc12.com/story/26319685/cops-summerville-high-school-student-arrested-after-writing-threatening-message-on-assignment) reports that his arrest came after he became irritated after being spoken to by police, who allege that he was 'disturbing schools'. ### UK teacher claims benefits of rugby outweigh the risks A UK teacher, writing for the [Telegraph](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/secondaryeducation/11055687/School-rugby-brings-more-benefits-than-risks.html), has opined that despite a 1 in 6 chance of being injured, playing rugby brings more benefits than risks.
