Australia set to get its first accredited dyslexia-friendly school

Samford State School in Brisbane's north-west is on its way to becoming Australia's first accredited dyslexia-friendly school, according to the ABC.

Following a push by parents, the school has embarked on a program to ensure that all of its teachers understand how to teach children with dyslexia.

The Australian Federation of SPELD (Specific Learning Difficulties) Associations estimates that up to 10% of the population is dyslexic.

In a report submitted to the Federal Government in 2010, the association advocated that a national program be established for the development and accreditation of ‘dyslexia-friendly’ schools.

"A funding scheme should be established to which schools could apply with a specific plan for making the school dyslexia-friendly,'' said the report.
