A 17-year-old has launched a lawsuit against a Catholic girls high school over allegedly expelling her for being gay, the New York Post has reported.

Amanda Acevedo, in court papers, said the administrator at Preston high school in Throggs Neck embarked on a two-year campaign of discrimination after she took a girl as her date on a school dance. She says the discrimination culminated in her expulsion.

“Such a disgraceful act is proof positive of the fact that they got rid of my daughter because of her sexual orientation,” said Acevedo’s father John.

The law suit alleges the school dean pulled the student aside after the dance and warned them against “any funny business".

Acevedo was expelled this year after getting into a fight with another student.

More than 200 students at the school have sign a petition for her return, the paper said.

A judge issued a temporary order on October 10 allowing her to return.
