NT school's "no excuses" policy lifts attendance

24/10/13

A school in the Northern Territory has reported a 10% improvement in student attendance since enforcing its "no excuses" policy.

"We still have major attendance issues but it's a chip-away thing,'' Jo Killmister, the local school attendance officer at Maningrida told the NT News.

"It's not about telling them they've got to go to school; it's about telling them the importance of education."

Maningrida is one of the schools involved in the recently launched Northern Territory Government Indigenous Education Review. Indigenous students make up around 40% of school enrolments in the NT.
