UK Parliament Debates New Measures to Protect Children with Health Conditions

19/10/13

Department of EducationThe Health Conditions in Schools Alliance, a grouping of health charities including Diabetes UK and Asthma, say a lack of training and understanding is putting the well being, health and even lives, of children at risk. Until now, Statutory Guidance issued by the Department of Education has laid out how schools should manage students’ health problems properly. Campaigners hope new laws will replace these guidelines. If parliament passes the new legislation, the governing body of every school in England will need to implement a Medical Conditions Policy, setting out how it will help children with such conditions. It would also require schools to draw up a healthcare plan for each pupil and to ensure school staff have been trained to provide help and deal with any emergencies.
