Parents in Victoria will soon face a $70 fine if their children miss more than five days of school a year without a good reason, according to News Limited.

"These infringement notices are an absolute last resort after all other avenues have been exhausted; including working directly with the family to identify why the student is missing school," said the Victorian Education Minister Martin Dixon.

The new fines will come into effect on March 1.

"It is absolutely vital that students attend school as often as possible, and schools and parents both have a role to play in ensuring this happens," Mr Dixon said.
