The Western Australian State Government is considering whether to introduce special disciplinary classes for students suspended from school in an attempt to reduce the state's high juvenile detention rate, according to The Australian.
"Suspension from school for some kids is a badge of honour, where they get to go to a mate's place and smoke pot," Corrective Services Minister Joe Francis told the paper.
"Really, what we should be doing is instead of saying 'Don't come to school, go do what you want', is 'Don't come to this school, go to a special classroom'," Mr Francis said.
But according to the paper, Education Minister Peter Collier is lukewarm about the idea, saying that most suspended students did not end up involved with juvenile justice.
