The South Australian Government will require new teachers from 2020 to have a Master degree and have studied for at least five years, according to the Advertiser.

The move, which has the support of the Australian Education Union, will make SA the first state to require Master level qualifications.

"Outside of parent support, the most effective way to lift the quality of our children's education is to lift the quality and status of teachers and educational leaders," said the SA Premier Jay Weatherill.

"We need to raise the status of teaching and education leadership as important, highly-valued jobs that are equal in terms of community impact to being a doctor or engineer," he said.
