Australian Sikh Student denied school enrolment for wearing turban
SBS news reported, that a Sikh family has approached the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) after school allegedly refused to enrol their son because his turban does not align with school uniform policy.  The Sikh boy’s family claims that the uniform policy inflicts indirect discrimination against their religious belief.  The family has lodged a claim with the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission.

Incidents Involving Assaults, Weapons, Drugs, on the Rise in Hunter Schools
According to the Newcastle Herald, students at various schools in the Hunter region are being charged after several incidents where an assistant principal was knocked on the ground; throwing a bottle at a teacher’s face after being asked for a book; stabbing a peer with a pencil; kicking a door off its hinges; making threatening phone calls to pupils; and found with drug while on an excursion. An analysis of incidents over the first half of 2016 shows 264 incidents across the region related to violence, drug use, weapons, concern for welfare and the use of technology.

The Catholic Leader reported a teacher, Majella Ritchie, at only 24 and only four years out of university, is the youngest to take up role of school Principal at Radiant Life College.   Her passion for teaching, learning, and providing the best education of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, has converted record attendance rates, rising from 54 percent in 2014 to 98 percent at the end of last year.

Queensland government reveals asbestos-ridden schools as Gold Coast MPs push for clear management and removal plan
The Gold Coast Bulletin reported that Gold Coast parents can now find out if their child’s school has asbestos.  An updated register showing 55 Gold Coast educational facilities with Asbestos material located on their grounds.  The register also details the specific areas of concern such as toilet blocks, outdoor awnings, classrooms, staff offices and libraries.

USA: School Fires Web Co-ordinator for Correcting a Student’s Bad Grammar on Twitter
News.com.au reported that a Web Co-ordinator has been fired after correcting a student’s grammar on social media site Twitter.  The Web Co-ordinator was terminated after the chastising a student who misspelled tomorrow as “tammarow” on Twitter.

USA: Supreme Court Gets between Schools and Parents
The Bloomberg View reported that the US Supreme Court in United States of America took up a challenging policy question:  How much is a school district obligated to educate?  The Justices of the Supreme Court are considering whether a child with a disability will receive the same level of education as a child without a disability.  The Justices will consider a wide variety of decisions from the lower courts, the Department of Justice and the parents and schools in the case.  The choices range from just a little more than nothing to the same level of education available to other kids. The outcome will have major consequences for tens of thousands of students and for the schools where they study.

India: Students Allege Being Attacked by Principal
The Hindu reported an allegation of a school Principal attacking two students.  It is alleged that the Principal attacked one student with a cutter, inflicting 4 or 5 cuts and the other student tried to stop attack and suffered injuries to his throat and hands.   The Principal claims that he was manhandled by the two student and rang a bell to alert the watchman, by that time they used a blade and caused inflicted injuries on themselves.
