Schoolteacher awarded $700,000 for injury by student

A schoolteacher in NSW has been awarded nearly $700,000 in compensation after being pulled backwards by an unruly 8 year old. She sustained injuries that rendered her unable to work, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. The Court was critical of the policies and procedures at the school, stating that the child posed a risk to the safety of students and teachers and should have been removed.

Former teacher sentenced for sending sexual Facebook messages to students

In WA, a former teacher who posed as a student on Facebook and solicited sexual photos from girls at the school he was teaching, has been sentenced to 15 months jail. He was also convicted of other indecent acts. The teacher was earlier dismissed following an investigation by the Department of Education.

School Places website launched for Private Schools

A website called School Places has been launched with the aim of providing a model for filling vacancies at private schools. On the website, last minute places will be offered to parents with a discount attached. The website aims to allow private schools to fill last-minute places and bolster their bottom lines.

Child in WA diagnosed with meningococcal

A child in WA has been diagnosed with Meningococcal, reports the Herald Sun. Despite this, the WA Health Department has stated that the incidence of meningococcal in WA is decreasing. The child is the fourth person to contract the disease in WA this year.

Guns stolen from QLD school

Thieves have smashed through the brick wall of an armoury at private school in Brisbane to steal 10 firearms, according to the Courier Mail. A person has been apprehended in connection with this, and bail has been refused. The college is reviewing its security in the wake of the break-in.

Teacher stabbed to death

In the UK, a teacher has died after being stabbed to death. A 15 year old student was subsequently arrested. The Guardian reports that the teacher had taught at the school for a long time, and had been well liked. The National Union of Teachers has stated that incidents such as these are ‘thankfully, very rare’.

Teacher gives student lap dance after being ‘convinced by class’

A teacher in the US has been charged with offences against students after allegedly giving one a lap dance because the ‘class convinced her to do it’. The school in Houston, Texas, has stated that the safety and security of students continues to be a top priority. The teacher was released on bail.

Parents in Canada want vaccinations to be mandatory

The Province reports that, in an online petition, parents are asking for vaccinations to be made mandatory for children enrolling in schools in British Columbia. In Ontario, another Canadian Province, such vaccinations are already mandatory. Supports have cited the statistic that in BC, 400 cases of measles have been reported, whilst only 17 cases have been reported in Ontario.

In Toronto, Canada, a former school student is suing the proprietor of his school after ripping open his arm on the glass pane of a hallway door. The student alleges that the school was negligent for not replacing a plane of old glass with new safety glass. The Toronto Sun reports that the student is seeking damages for the extensive injuries which resulted.

School staff lavished with gifts by private school parents

In the Daily Mail, there are reports that flights, diamonds and Chanel bags are being offered to teachers and staff as a means of gaining favour. In response, some schools have implemented caps on the value of gifts that teachers can receive. The Tatler Schools Guide has requested, and plans to publish, the gifts policies of all its schools.
