The 24-hour counselling service, ChildLine, reported a 87% surge in young people seeking help as a result of online bullying in 2012-13, according The Guardian.

The online support service reported that it dealt with 4507 cases of cyber-bullying over the year, up from the previous 12 month's 2410 cases.

The CEO of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Peter Wanless, said the key issues ChildLine is dealing with today are significantly different to the key problems of a generation ago.

"Stranger danger, for example, rarely comes up in contacts to ChildLine but depression, self-harm, online bullying and even suicide contacts are increasing exponentially. If we are to help young people we need to listen to what they are telling us about the issues they are facing."
