Vic school accused of discriminating against girl with Asperger's

28/10/13

The mother is taking a school to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal for refusing to allow her daughter, who suffers from Asperger's Syndrome, to attend a school camp in Africa.

"I am still hoping an apology will come ... for making an erroneous decision, a discrimanatory decision, they don't understand what they've done is wrong," the mother Kerrie Curtis told the Bayside Leader.

The trip will involve 40 students from Brighton Secondary College learn about leadership, problem-solving and teamwork at a camp.

The student, Isabelle, said: "I've been discriminated against. I'm a patrol leader at my local guides, and have done lots of volunteer work at the local vets, and I'm a lifeguard. I've got a lot of references.

"It's hard to go back to school when the teachers don't believe in me."
